Empty Nest

EMPTY NEST
Nothing like dropping your one and only child off at college three hours away to make you appreciate the life of a mother bird!
The nest on the farm is definitely empty! The preparation and moving process were both hectic enough to keep most tears at bay. You truly cannot imagine all the stuff kids take to college today! I think I had a couple suitcases of clothes, three pairs of shoes, bed linens and some toiletries. Well the stuff we hauled over to Auburn was a tight squeeze even in the big 'ol pick up truck and the SUV combined! She certainly should be comfortable. And, I must say, her room looks quite chic...........a far cry from my dorm room back those many years ago. If you haven't yet bought your Target or Walmart stock, I would not hesitate at this point. The shelves looked like a hurricane was forecast to hit any day. Bottled water and cokes were gone, storage containers likewise gone, ditto for bathroom items. I'm not sure we ever even got around to the 'school supply' section. All the chaos was medicine however to keep my full heart from tumbling open.........that is until the ride home. Then a few tears crept out, despite my best efforts to contain them. We are slowly acclimating to the new found quiet. Of course husband was acclimated about 5 minutes after he returned. His motto: 'not to worry, she'll be back'. Wish I was so easily comforted!
