Shop 'til you drop!

I went to a farmer's market in Atlanta this weekend. There is something about the warm spring weather that makes me want to go on a food shopping adventure. When I think of a farmer's market I have a vision of an open-air-but-covered shelter similar to a picnic shelter one might rent at the beach for a birthday party. Well this farmer's market did not look like my 'ideal' of a market but what it lacked in classic market visual appeal, it more than made up for in content. Once again; never judge a book by its cover!! This place was an amazing array of food. Anything you could think of from spices, oils, and condiments to produce, fish, meat and baked goods. And did I mention wine? There was a mind boggling assortment of produce; many the likes of which I had never before seen. There was some strange fruit from Jamaica, and greens of every possible description and size - from mammoth to tee tiny. The fish department was an adventure in itself. There were three different sections within the bigger fish department. One could purchase a whole fresh fish, handsomely displayed on ice. This was sold by the pound, but the price included having the whole thing cleaned and filleted. There was quite a line in this area, where numbers were available for the taking. Many people decided to take one of those numbers; the fish just looked too good. There was also a huge selection of already filleted fish but somehow this paled in comparison to the whole selections. Finally, there were several large tanks of super fresh (i.e., live ) fish, crab, lobster, and crayfish from which to choose. I made it out of there with oysters and some royal red shrimp, along with several items of produce and some baked goods. I will definitely be back for more!
