Some things just catch you by surprise

Having lived most of my life in a decent sized city, I was a bit unprepared for some of the life moments that occur out in the country.
Some of these occurrences are simple and really not that surprising.I can see so many stars at night that the few constellations I used to recognize are completely hidden in the brilliant night sky. If I sleep with my windows open I can hear all sorts of sounds, from the neighbor's dog barking ( and my own damn dog barking ), to the hoot of the owls and the howl of the coyotes, not to mention the cicadas. The moon, at times will light up the night sky so much I think I am back in the city when I look out the window in the middle of the night. None of these things are really that shocking.
But let me tell you some of the things that flat out caught me by surprise. Did you know that lady bugs can swarm and take over your ceilings from fall until spring? Did you know its possible to shoot a carpenter bee in mid-flight to stop the damage to your front porch? Did you know there are more baptist churches per square inch than there are lady bugs and you're hard put to find a catholic or episcopal church for miles? There are more stand-in-line, serve yourself restaurants in this area than there should be in the entire state. People will hold the door for you and even let you get in front of them in a line, just to be polite. They will never honk at you if you sit at a green light, or fuss if you take an extra hour to check out at the grocery store. They will, however, drive an inch from your bumper and turn on a dime, never thinking to use a blinker.
Yep, there's alot to get used to here. Check back for more reflections on the country life!

  1. Terry...great observations. The quiet of country life is best noticed when sometimes broken by the dogs barking (in the distance, hopefully) or a far-away train whistle, which I hear often here in Dunnavent Valley, AL. So on your page, girl-fren...
