I have to tell you about the deer. For those of you used to the country life, I'm sure this comes as no surprise. But for us city folk, it is quite something! Since we have a lot of land, we have a lot of deer, no question about it. The big white-tailed deer. They are interesting and entertaining. (Their coat changes color depending on the season). The land directly around our house is mostly cleared, with wooded areas surrounding the clearings. It is routine to see the deer in the cleared fields at dusk and in the early mornings. It is also not unusual to see them at odd times throughout the day, there just tend to be many more early and late in the day. Normally they are in groups of at least 2 and upward to as many as 6 or 8, and there may be multiple groups at one time. We do not hunt on our land, but neighbors hunt on theirs, so the deer are fairly skittish. The dogs will often chase the deer, especially if humans are present. If no humans are around, the dogs don't seem to notice the deer at all ( I think they are just showing off to impress us). One day this week, as I was leaving to drive my wonderful school bus at 6 AM, I pulled out of the garage only to see at least 6 deer standing in my FRONT YARD, no more than 10 feet from my front door, chewing on my shrubs. Now, as you can probably tell, I really don't mind the deer. In fact, I kind of like them. But in my FRONT YARD????? when they have 67 acres to choose from!! Next thing you know they are going to want wine served on the front porch.
